Legal Connection: Military Matters
Nearly 32,000 veterans reside in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area. Legal assistance ranks third in unmet needs of veterans, according to the VA. As veterans make the transition from military life to civilian life they encounter complex issues including: denial of disability benefits, lack of access to housing due to eviction or foreclosure, child support arrears and the inability to secure and maintain employment. Some are in need of guardianship. More often than not they do not realize the legality of these issues and it is this lack of knowledge that too often creates significant instability in their lives.
Legal Connection: Military Matters strives to fill the gap in legal services available to veterans and active duty military personnel who reside in or have a home of record in one of these nine counties: Jackson County, MO; Cass County, MO; Clay County, MO; Johnson County, MO; Lafayette County, MO; Platte County, MO; Ray County, MO; Johnson County, KS; Wyandotte County, KS.
Military Matters collaborates with support agencies serving veterans in the area to identify the most needed legal services and provide assistance to those who do not quality for aid from other agencies. Our partners include the Kansas City VA, United Way of Greater Kansas City, Legal Aid of Western Missouri, Kansas Legal Services, and Veterans Community Project.
